Program
“SLEEP: A S’real S’rvey of the Nightscape” is a piece of music-theater for storyteller, dancers, video puppets and a chamber ensemble of various kinds of guitars and percussion, including a resonator guitar fretted in just intonation and a quarter-tone guitar chorus - Dreams are the subjects of SLEEP, and the piece draws its presentational techniques from those of variety shows, dance recitals, poetry readings and both traditional theater and radio theater. It's compositional technique is a blending of world music and classical music methods. Its percussion functions in the classical manner, ie. it is decorative rather than motoric (as is the case in popular musics such as rock and and jazz.) In SLEEP, the pitches carry the rhythm of the piece, as is the classical practice. Occasionally, the music melts.
