European virtuoso Mak Grgic plays music from five centuries on refretted guitars, including music of the Renaissance master da Milano in meantone temperament, Baroque music of S. W. Weiss and the mighty Bach Chaconne in well temperament, as well as West Coast premieres of twentieth-century gems Surrounded for quarter-tuned guitar by Swedish composer Sven-David Sändstrom, Radulescu’s extraordinary Subconcious Wave (1985) for guitar and digital sound, and a world premiere by Turkish composer Hakki Cengiz Eren.
“a lyrical insightful player…” playing with “beauty” and “intelligence”, his interpretations “nuanced and introspective. His performance of Weiss’s Passacaglia in D Major was proclaimed a “high point of the evening,” offering “a superb, finely detailed reading that showed Grgic is a guitarist to keep an eye on.”
