The 2006 Festival of Microtonal Music

Ben Johnston 80th Birthday Concert

Wednesday May 17 / 8:30
REDCAT Theater in Disney Hall 621 W. Second St. Los Angeles

Ben Johnston picked up the history of tonality where it stalled in the 16th century, and carried it into the 21st. Rhythmically, harmonically, notationally, he leaped out ahead and created the means for a future music we haven't heard yet.
—Kyle Gann (Village Voice)

To Celebrate this American Master's 80th birthday, REDCAT presents for the first time ever, both masterworks for retuned piano works in an evening of chamber music rarely, if ever, performed in Los Angeles, including the infamous Knocking Piece that started riots in Europe.

Piano: Suite [1978] - piano kindly supplied & prepared by European Pianocraft (Signal Hill, CA)
